CrossFit Coal is about helping each and everyone meet their fitness goals. Whether you are a beginner to working out in general or you are a competitive CrossFit athlete, we've got what you're looking for! Stop by and visit us during our WOD Times or our Open Gym hours.

CrossFit Coal uses the fundamentals of CrossFit as the basis of our program. CrossFit is high-intensity, functional movements, done so across all different times and modal domains. In a nutshell, you never know what you're going to be doing so be prepared for it all! However, don't be intimated, we can scale down all of our workouts for any level of athlete that is with us to ensure safety while maintaining quality for progress.

Coach Chip puts it into perspective as good as anyone:

I have been around some of the most gifted athletes in West Virginia, and while I'm amazed by their abilities and dedication, quite honestly they don't inspire me. They don't motivate me to want to work out harder, eat better or live healthier. The people I find truly inspirational are the people who struggle to complete these workouts daily and keep coming back for more. I believe that principle is at the core of CrossFit culture. It is inspiring to look beside you during a CrossFit workout and appreciate the effort that person is putting forth. You can see the mental and physical struggles they are enduring, but you watch them keep going despite those obstacles.

CrossFit is as much about mental change as it is physical change. And, it is impossible to experience that type of a change amongst a group of people and not grow close to them. I often say that the CrossFit motto should be “forging elite friendships” instead of “forging elite fitness”. When you watch people overcome obstacles and barriers they didn't believe they could overcome, you gain an amount of respect for them that is hard to put into words.

One of the things we say at CrossFit Coal is, "better than yesterday." We didn't make up that saying, and I'm not sure who did, but it very simply describes what the goal is here. If you focus on being just a little healthier than you were the day before, then at the end of a month, six months, or a year, you've accomplished something very special!

Getting healthy and experiencing quality workouts has very little to do with the equipment you are using and your physical surroundings. It has everything to do with quality programming, coaching, and your desire to improve your own life. That is why the grass roots of CrossFit are garage gyms, warehouses, and farms.

I spent 20 years working out in health clubs, and the day I found CrossFit, I realized I wasn't in very good shape at all! As many of you know, I was born with a physical disability. When I first discovered CrossFit, I was scared of it because I wasn't sure I would be able to perform many of the standard CrossFit movements. CrossFit forced me to confront my physical limitations, learn from them, and then smash them into the ground!

I don't care if you can't lift 10 pounds, if you're 100 pounds overweight, if you're in your 70s, or if you have never picked up a weight in your life, you already possess everything you need to live a healthier life. All we are going to do here is help you find that within yourself.
